Stay Motivated At Work Over The Summer Period!

29 July 2010

It’s that time of year again: Summer. Summer is that periodMotivate Employees of time where the workforce tends to slow down and productivity in the office can fall to an all time low. This is because more people are jetting off on their summer holidays in search of the sun and the other employees are left behind feeling unmotivated, staring out the window and generally wishing they were anywhere else than stuck in their stuffy office.

Whether you have just come back from a holiday in the sun and are finding it hard snap out of holiday mode or you are one of the unlucky ones that have been left behind; we all need some extra motivation at some point during the summer months.

Here are some tips on how to stay motivated at work:

1. Have a plan and prioritise your workload. It can be easy to become caught up with non-urgent matters just because they seem a good way to ease yourself into the day. But these take up valuable time and can often be left till a later date. You need to ask yourself what is the most important thing you need to get done today? Once you have specified a goal, you should then focus on it until it is completed. Once you have a plan you will be amazed at how much you can get done when you focus your mind.

2. Break down goals into manageable steps. If you have a large, daunting project you need to do then the best thing you need to do is to break it down into manageable chunks. Instead of seeing the project as something that is hanging over you, instead take it step-by-step and you will feel much better equipped to take on the challenge. If you have a game plan you are much more likely to succeed so don’t just throw yourself head first into large projects. Instead stand back and see it as a series of steps leading to an end project. You will also get a sense of achievement as you tick off your list of things to do.

3. Get someone else to monitor you. Sometimes we can’t trust ourselves to keep on track and we need the help or even just the presence of others to spur us on. If you work in an office with someone else, ask them to check in on your progress during the day. Try and make sure that this is a person that you want to impress so that the pressure of not performing will act as a motivation to succeed. Also by explaining to someone else where you are at in your working day it can help you to feel more on track and understand how much or little you have done.

If you follow these three tips each day at work, you are sure to keep motivated at work even if the sun is shining outside or your summer holiday is calling!
