HR Case Study - Shared Intelligence

Situation

Shared Intelligence is a team of professionals dedicated to sharing knowledge to bring success. Shared Intelligence works with partners throughout the UK in projects such as community regeneration, economic development and public service improvement.

Alison Southgate is Human Resources Assistant. Katy Donnelly is Programme Director. People Vision has established a handpicked team of specialist consultants who design and deliver training across a range of Human Resources skills. Alyson Pellowe is the founder of People Vision and Sian Hughes is a consultant and specialist in employment law.

Shared Intelligence

Challenge

People Vision was engaged to cover several projects on a retained basis, spending an average of 1 day a week at Shared Intelligence in London. The challenge was to audit and to make recommendations for change, and to implement some of those changes. Alyson was also to provide support to Alison Southgate and to mentor her within her role during the journey of auditing and the resulting adjustments.

Action

  • Alyson made a thorough audit of the existing processes and HR structure and made recommendations for change.
  • Along with Sian Hughes Alyson implemented changes to a number of the HR processes such as contracts and handbooks.
  • A rightsizing project was required to ensure the organisation was operating at maximum efficiency and all staff were consulted on the process. The necessary cost savings were implemented well within the legal framework.
  • Alyson reviewed the appraisals system to streamline it and ensure that all team members had clearer objectives. Alison Southgate commented that “Alyson revised the appraisal system and everyone was involved in that process.”
  • More recently Alyson has been the project lead on the review of the Investors in People standard. Shared Intelligence was accredited in 2007 and now need to be ready for the next review in 2010. This requires working with many people in the business to ensure that there is plenty of evidence to support the review.

Results

  • Having objective advisors during the reorganisation helped to facilitate adjustment to the changes. The consultation process aided in setting up and adhering to clear processes and systems for change management.
  • The appraisals system now functions as an effective developmental tool for everyone within Shared Intelligence. Alison Southgate mentioned that she “really liked the way the changes streamlined the whole process and made people think a lot more about setting more direct objectives within the final system that Alyson implemented. As a whole it’s been a great improvement.”
  • Having a regular mentoring and advisory presence has helped Alison Southgate to respond to the changes within the company and to advance her capabilities within her role. “I find Alyson really easy to work with, she’s very supportive and it’s really working well. Alyson has line managed me in a few areas and given handy tips on time management and organising your workload. We’ve been concentrating on the actual systems we’ve had to complete within Human Resources functions.”
  • Having completed the new appraisals process Alyson is now working on the Learning and Development Plan which will result in a range of on and off-site interventions to suit the needs of the individuals.
  • Shared Intelligence is now on a journey to be re-accredited for Investors in People accreditation in August 2010.

Client Testimonial

“As someone who is starting their HR career, having a company like People Vision to work alongside offers the resources to deal with HR issues on a day to day basis. Alyson is a joy to work with and is very approachable which strengthens my confidence in my ability to deliver and improve on our HR policies and Procedures”
