Competence FrameworksCompetency Frameworks

A competence framework can be as complex or simple as your business needs. But what is it?

 

Competencies are set by a standard for the organisation for the employee of the expected areas and levels of performance. They provide the individual with clear guidlines as to behaviour that will be valued, recognised and in some organisations rewarded.

 

The framework means you simply use the same competencies across all your people management processes.

 

The use of competencies was featured heavily in the 2007 Learning and Development survey for the CIPD. The survey results showed that 60% of the respondents had a competency framework in place for their organisation.

 

Remember that we at People Vision HR think that these figures were gathered from organisations that have employed a CIPD qualified individual, which is why they were targeted.

 

However, it does seem to be the case that in more often than not organisations use competencies in one form or another.

The CIPD report shows that the most popular terms used in competencies were:

  • communication skills
  • people management
  • team skills
  • customer service skills 
  • results-orientation
  • problem-solving.
